The Rossiter Lecture 2011, The more the Rail the Faster the Mail, Powerpoint Presentation by Colin Tabeart

The massive development of the steam engine through the 19th century, much of it inspired and pioneered in the UK, led to two major advances in communication: the steam railways and steamships.

Beginning in 1824 the UK set up a vast network of steamship communication across the world, long before any other nation became involved. Initially, the primitive steam engines and huge coal consumption gave average speeds over long distances rarely above about 8 knots, rising to 14 or 15 knots by the end of the century (20 knots for crack transatlantic liners), but the land-based railways were always much faster.

Wherever possible, Post Offices around the world sought to utilise this greater speed, usually in combination with steamship journeys, this being the combination that Colin will address.

The scope covers speeding of the mails: within the UK to point of departure of the ships; within Europe for mails to the Mediterranean, Far East and Australia; within Australia; across North America via San Francisco and via Vancouver; and finally that huge enterprise, the Trans-Siberian Railway. The talk will be illustrated with maps, pictures, and covers from Colin's collection.

Colin is a Fellow and Past President of the Society of Postal Historians, a member of the Postal History Society and Forces Postal History Society, and edits the quarterly Journal for the latter. He has written eight books on postal history topics, the latest pair of which cover all the packet ship mails between the UK and Australia and New Zealand in the 19th century.
