The Author has tackled a subject that has never been covered in this detail before; the references and bibliography in annexe show the depth of his research. Starting with an introduction to censorship he goes on to describe the objectives and legal aspects and how the mails are censored. Successive chapters deal with the treatment of mail to and from the enemy, neutral and allied countries in different spheres of the world, country by country. Inland mail is also covered as is prisoner of war and internees mail. Each special category of mail is described. All of the censor’s slips, labels and handstamps are illustrated as are a large number of covers relevant to the text. Appendices give historical and political background and there is an abstract of Post Office circulars. This is an important and highly readable book for the postal and social historian dealing with the problems of communication during the difficult and dark time of war. |
